Video presentations for Democratic Candidates in Harris County (Houston), Texas

Last night at the Harris County Young Democrats meeting, I talked to Melissa Taylor, who is the Executive Director of the Harris County Democratic Party. I emphasized the importance of getting our candidate's message out to as many people as possible and suggested that we create videos that will air on Houston MediaSource and that they can also use for their own needs. She thought it was a smashing idea, so I will be working on that in the coming months.

As soon as a new one is finished, I will try to upload it somewhere so you can see it.

If you would like to help out in any way, please let me know!

I'm hoping to hit up some debates around the area, too.

Texas Senate District 6 Democratic Convention

I went to my State Senate District Convention today. It wasn't super fun, but all of my resolutions to add items to the Texas Democratic Party Platform were approved and I was elected to be a delegate to the Texas Democratic Convention in Forth Worth this June. I'm looking forward to that because I AM MAKING A DIFFERENCE!!!! It's kind of easy. Just show up.

The coolest part of the day were the tons and tons of politicians that showed up and gave speeches: State Reps. Ana Hernandez, Jessica Farrar and Garnett Coleman, County Commissioner Sylvia Garcia, Mayor Pro Tem Carol Alvarado, and US Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee. There were also many candidates for office such as David Van Os (for Texas Attorney General), Barbara Ann Radnofsky (US Senate), Hank Gilbert (Agriculture Commissioner) and some more that I can't even remember right now. Fun stuff.

Giago: Oglala Sioux president on state abortion law
Tuesday, March 21, 2006

"When Governor Mike Rounds signed HB 1215 into law it effectively banned all abortions in the state with the exception that it did allow saving the mother’s life. There were, however, no exceptions for victims of rape or incest. His actions, and the comments of State Senators like Bill Napoli of Rapid City, SD, set of a maelstrom of protests within the state.

Napoli suggested that if it was a case of “simple rape,” there should be no thoughts of ending a pregnancy. Letters by the hundreds appeared in local newspapers, mostly written by women, challenging Napoli’s description of rape as “simple.” He has yet to explain satisfactorily what he meant by “simple rape.”

The President of the Oglala Sioux Tribe on the Pine Ridge Reservation, Cecilia Fire Thunder, was incensed. A former nurse and healthcare giver she was very angry that a state body made up mostly of white males, would make such a stupid law against women.

“To me, it is now a question of sovereignty,” she said to me last week. “I will personally establish a Planned Parenthood clinic on my own land which is within the boundaries of the Pine Ridge Reservation where the State of South Dakota has absolutely no jurisdiction.”

Strong words from a very strong lady. I hope Ms. Fire Thunder challenges Gov. Rounds and the state legislators on this law that is an affront to all independent women."

Last night's candle light vigil/war protest on Dunlavy Bridge over US 59

Last night my friend Russell picked me up and we went to the Dunlavy Bridge over US 59 to hold up signs and candles.

It was amazing to get the 95% positive response from thousands of people who drove under that bridge. It saddened me that we did get a couple of one finger salutes, but there will always be ignorant hateful people in this world.

There was mention of making this a weekly event, which I hope happens. There weren't a whole lot of people on the bridge, and I would attribute that to the fact that there wasn't very much word on it. If they do it every week, then I think people would learn more about what's going on and the group would grow every time.

Movie recommendation

V for Vendetta was about a perfect movie as one could ask for. The only negative reviews of this movie are from people who say that it glorifies terrorism. It doesn't glorify it, it explains it. For every action, there is an opposite and equal reaction. No coincidences. People shouldn't fear their government. Governments should fear their people.

Absolutely.

Why would I recommend a movie produced by an amoral corporation? Because it's not only an amazing film, but proves that they only care about making money. The ideas presented in this film go against almost everything that they stand for. They're just too damn greedy to care. Their own destruction will come from the poison they feed themselves at their own trough.

Welcome to my new outlet

As I've become more and more politically active, I feel that Live Journal has outgrown itself as a means to reach people, especially considering that all of my entries are "friends only". This blogspot will be my political journal and a record of upcoming and past events. I will leave it open for all to see, so I will hopefully be able to reach a wider audience and get more people actively involved in making this country the best that it possibly can be.
