PRIDE Houston 2006

So Saturday was the GLBT PRIDE Festival and Parade here in Houston. Democracy for Houston had a booth and as soon as I got off of work, I went and helped get some people registered to vote and to sell some buttons.

Here's our booth and some of our buttons:

We also mingled in the festival a bit to try to get people to register to vote.

Here are some other sights from the festival:

Great shirt, man!

Then it was time for the parade!

And then my beautiful girlfriend Cecily and I left when we started getting pelted (literally) with these glow sticks:

June 2006 Democracy for Houston meetup

Don't forget that the June Democracy for Houston meetup will be this Wednesday night at 7 PM at the Harris County Democratic Headquarters! We will be discussing this past weekend's Texas Democratic Party Convention, upcoming events, and other things that we can do to move Texas forward!

Letter from Texas Democratic Party Chairman, Boyd Richie

Dear Fellow Democrats,

This past weekend, Texas Democrats showed the people of Texas that we stand up for values and priorities shared by Texans from all walks of life. We're teachers and business owners, firefighters and students, refinery workers and professionals... people you see every day who are united by our commitment to Moving Texas Forward to a better future.

I want to thank everyone who participated in the convention process - from attending precinct conventions back in March to the state convention in Fort Worth - for all you have done to help build the enthusiasm and do the work to make our convention a success. The Texas Democratic Party is strong enough to win this November and beyond, by working together as one team to rebuild our party, communicate our message, and motivate our Democratic base, we will send a bunch of Republicans packing, just like Tom DeLay.

I also want to thank Glen Maxey, Charlie Urbina-Jones and Lakesha Rogers - for running constructive campaigns that emphasized your ideas about how we can improve our Party. I look forward to working with you as we strive to provide our candidates, local party leaders and grassroots organizers the tools and the support they need to communicate with voters and turn out the winning margin in November.

Thanks to all of you, when the convention adjourned, the Texas Democratic Party was stronger than when we arrived. We are united and eager to defeat the corrupt Republican leadership that has used our government to benefit their campaign donors and pad the pockets of their cronies.

After talking to thousands of delegates and watching the genuine enthusiasm that greeted our candidates as they spoke to caucuses and the convention as a whole, I'm confident that Democrats are ready to do the hard work it takes to win. That hard work begins right now. We look forward to helping your efforts to organize your neighborhoods, volunteer for local campaigns or help train others. Together, we can change the future of our state and nation.

Your friend and fellow Democrat,

Boyd L. Richie
Chairman

I return from the convention!

Hello,

You have been invited to visit a photo album http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v463/robbzipp/2006%20Texas%20Democratic%20Convention%20-%20Fort%20Worth/

The read only password to view this album is: boogers

There are 110 pictures there, so LOOKOUT! I don't even know how to go about explaining them all, so if you look at them and have a question, please feel free to copy the image location in the comments and ask.

Last weekend the Texas Republicans met in San Antonio to discuss their hatred for Mexicans and anyone who isn't a Fundamentalist Chrisianist. This weekend Texas Democrats met in Fort Worth to discuss ways in which we as people can work together to help our fellow man. It was a weekend of making new friends, bonding with aquaintences and changing lives forever and for the better. I'm glad I went and I can't believe I almost didn't go.

Burnt Orange Report has an amazingly detailed and accurate description of the entire event, if you would like details.

2006 Texas Democratic Convention - Fort Worth

I've taken a little vacation from politics to fall in love with soccer, but I will return to my full activist honing duties next weekend as I attend the Texas Democratic State Convention in Fort Worth.

I told several people that I wouldn't be attending due to financial reasons, but they've all stepped up and made me realize what a mistake that would be to pass up my very first State Convention.

I have no idea what to expect. I will be riding with some people who I'm not sure I even know and be staying in a room with some other people I'm not sure I even know and I really have no clue as to what even happens at these conventions. I think I'll be voting on some stuff. That's pretty much clear. I also think there will be some alcoholic beverages consumed at some point.

I'll try to update this blog somehow while I'm up there, but if that isn't possible, wait for photos and videos the week after the convention.

I'm a little nervous, which is a bit unlike me.
